INTRODUCTION
BGCP_ID
Numbered BGCP identifiers have only been assigned to grave slabs in situ within the graveyard. These were assigned (mostly) in the order they were recorded, and follow a general east–west distribution.
Where a grave marker comprises more than one distinct stone, a single number as been assigned, although letters (a, b, etc) may be used to identify the different pieces.
Two stones – the Angus Stone and the Old Kirk Windowsill – are identified by name rather than number. The Angus Stone in known to have lain within the Old Kirk, before being moved outside, and ultimately relocated to the Parish Church in 1917. The origin of the stone forming the Old Kirk Windowsill is unknown, although markings on it suggest it may have had some use prior to the construction of the church in 1631.
Designations
Scheduled Monument SM5588: Balquhidder Parish Church.
The remains of the Old Kirk, and the area around it measuring 35 m E–W by 15 m N–S, are scheduled. Built in 1631, the Old Kirk is believed to overlie the foundations of a medieval, pre-Reformation church. The site is of national importance as an example of an early 17th century ecclesiastical structure and because of the potential for underlying archaeological remains of the earlier church associated with St Angus.
Scheduled Monument Consent (Case ID 300078992) was obtained from Historic Environment Scotland to allow recording within the scheduled area surrounding the Old Kirk.
Site Grid Reference
The site grid has its east–west axis set by the south wall of the Old Kirk, with the SW corner of the Old Kirk having the site grid reference of 20.00 east/24.00 north. This corresponds (to the nearest 1 m) to OS NGR NN 53562 20916. The site grid references for individual slabs mark the approximate centre of the stone.
