The slab, aligned W–E, lies c 7 m S of the SW corner of the Old Kirk. The slab is 1.79 m long (E–W) and 0.67 m wide, with straight sides and slightly bevelled edges. It has rounded corners at the head, and squared corners at the foot. There is a thin transverse crack across the bottom third of the slab.
Only part of the inscription is legible. It comprises, from the head:
Date: 1721
Two pairs of initials: MF and CM, separated by the top of a rectangular frame, round-cornered at top and squared at the base (perhaps mirroring the shape of the slab), with small opening in middle of base). The frame contains the outlines of two objects, a plough’s share and coulter.
There then follows 7 lines of text, only the first of which is fully legible, the second being only partly so; of the rest only individual letters can be identified:
HERE LIES IN HOPE OF A BLES / SED RESURR[?ECTION?] THE / R[?EMAINS OF?] …… F[?L?…] /
Towards the foot of the slab are two further lines of text, also largely illegible apart from some individual letters.
