BGCP_08: MacGregor 1773

Site co-ordinates: 43.30/16.90

Photogrammetry here

This large, well made rectangular slab is 1.75 m long (W–E) by 0.72 m wide, with moulding on the sides. The stone is a soft and flaky sandstone, and large areas of the surface have flaked away. The slab also has a large open crack at its W end, where it has sunk slightly into the grave.

At its head the slab bears a shield-shaped motif in raised relief, representing the MacGregor coat of arms – a shield with uprooted tree crossing a sword with a crown at its point (see also BGCP_05). The crown and the tree are split by the crack. Lettering is visible around the raised outline of the shield, and appears to be a version of the clan motto – E’en do but spare nocht

AND SPARE can be read across the top of the shield, but the rest of the lettering in unclear.

There are six lines of inscription halfway down the slab. This is clearest on the S side where the surface is least damaged:

THIS STO[NE] [WAS]…. ERECT / ED BY D … / N ….  / HIS …   [MACGRE?] / GOR.  W[HO DIED?….] / 1773
