BGCP_32: I S and cross

Site co-ordinates 31.30/10.80

Stuart 8?; Fisher J; RCAHMS EMCSP Balquhidder no.2 slab see here

Photogrammetry here

This grave slab is 1.75 m long (W–E), and up to 0.60 m wide at its slightly rounded W end, narrowing to 0.29 m at the slightly angled E end. It has a straight N side, but a sightly convex S side which has damage near its SE corner where a large flake has been lost. There is a crack running SE–NW near its E end, but this appears to have occurred after being laid. The slab slopes approximately 5° toward the SE.

Its surface bears a carved Roman cross, approximately 0.55 m long and 0.35 m wide, in raised relief, just W of centre. Its arms and stem average 0.07 m wide, but are of variable length – top 0.16 m; right 0.14 m; left 0.13 m; and stem 0.32 m. The stem has been damaged and lost part of its length. Just above and to the left of the cross are the slightly angled incised letters I S. There are also 3 short score marks on the slab’s N edge towards its W end.
